Suffolk Says Thanks

Celebrating everyday acts of kindness

#SuffolkSaysThanks

Taking the time to thank someone means a lot; often the small, everyday acts of kindness can make the biggest difference to people’s lives.

There are lots of easy ways to get involved, thank someone who is important to you and share some joy.

Thank friends, family, neighbours, teachers, co-workers and others in your community, for everyday acts of kindness or support.

Thanking people is also incredibly beneficial to our mental health and addresses two of the ‘Five ways to wellbeing’.

Layham in Suffolk – a great example of a community working together

The Covid response in Layham was a real community affair, working together to support vulnerable and isolating members of their community.

The Parish Council’s Emergency Plan swung into action as soon as the seriousness of the spread of Covid became clear.

Their established team of Emergency Link Volunteers (ELVs) distributed cards to all the households in their ‘patch’ and they introduced a system whereby people put a green card in the window if they were fine, or a red card displaying their phone number if they needed assistance,  in which case a ‘Buddy’ would call them.

The ELVs walked past the homes on their patch regularly to see which colour card was displayed. This formal safety net soon became largely unnecessary as relatives, friends and neighbours took on activities such as shopping, collecting prescriptions, chatting by phone and contacting online.

Layham Parish Council would also like to mention their two public houses during  the first lockdown.

The Marquis delivered bags of home baked bread and other treats, while The Queen’s Head delivered meals to people who were isolating and during the summer school holidays, provided lunches for those children entitled to free school  meals.

Several parishioners donated fabric and a team made face masks for the village. They changed how the ‘green team’ worked so that volunteers could socially distance and members of the community collected litter on a regular basis.

While the usual arrangements for keeping the churchyard and burial ground were ‘on hold’, volunteers also tidied these areas up, cutting grass and trimming hedges.

People are still looking out for each other and assisting with shopping etc. Although the pandemic has been traumatic for everyone, they are very proud that the parishioners of Layham pulled together and showed real community spirit.
